Large Wooden Planters
Are Large Wooden Planters Worth The Hype?
As you probably know by now, planters are available in a number of shapes, sizes, colors and materials. Considering the amount of variety available for the average customer to choose from, you’re probably wondering why or how it even makes a difference. Well, there are differences and different materials and shapes and sizes DO in fact mean different effects for your garden, plant or your efforts!
So What Are Wooden Planters?
Wooden planters are industrial planters that are completely or mostly made of wood. Wood as a material has a suave look native only to it and absolutely irreplaceable. Of course, there is a range of wood materials available right from basic plywood and rosewood to sturdier and exquisite varieties such as teak! These varieties of wood all have their own special properties and vary greatly in density, toughness, weight and strength.
Why Large Wooden Planters?
Large wooden planters are a great way to grow medium sized trees and shrubs in your garden, campus or office outdoors. Wooden planters are MUCH lighter in weight than their concrete counterparts, so transporting and moving empty and occupied wooden planters is twice as easy. Â
Au Naturel: Large wooden planters also pose the advantage of being healthy for the soil in which your plants are growing. Concrete and other materials do contain chemicals that can affect the soil and change the balance, thus affecting the growth of your plant or tree. Excess limestone can affect the pH of the soil over time and eventually deny your plant the growth it was supposed to attain.
Paint crazy: Wooden planters boast of wearing paint well! Whether you are looking for a company logo on your planter, or are just looking to paint your wooden planters to brighten up the sidewalk, large wooden planters are simply the way to go. You not only have some nice space to paint in whatever you want (get creative!), but you have trees, shrubs or plants with complementing flowers and leaves to give your site the perfect look!
Great To Look At: Wooden planters have the distinction of looking great almost anywhere. Whether you’re looking to place large wooden planters as stand alone pieces of furniture around your garden, along the sidewalk, to mark boundaries for your garden, or in your porch, it’s tough to make an eyesore out of wooden planters!
Lightweight: One of the greatest advantages of a large wooden planter has to be it’s small weight in comparison to a large concrete planter of the same dimensions and volume. You may find it easy to transport and move around large wooden planters on wheels or rollers, but the same cannot be said of large concrete planters- you’ll probably end up hiring King Kong to move them!
Why Not?
In spite of all these advantages, large wooden planters come with some problems as well.
Rotting: Wood is prone to rotting so it is important to make sure you line the inner areas of your wooden planters with plastic before putting in the soil. Damp soil that sits on the wood highly increases the chances of your beautiful wooden planter going waste in months, or even weeks!
Pests: Wood, though strong, is not necessarily pest proof. There are a number of pesky insects such as termites and carpenter ants just waiting to snack over your wooden planter- so there is a great need to treat wooden planters before you actually use them. Concrete planters on the other hand don’t need any sort of prior treatment and are bound to keep the termites hungry for long.
